The Birth of the Titans

Meanwhile lonely Gaia felt the touch of Eros and produced a lover of herself and for her herself; his name was Uranus (Heaven) and he covered her with his black velvet cloak, decorated with glittering stars, amongst which the gods would later make a home. Gaia twisted and turned and formed Ourea (the mountains), the home of Oreads (Mountain nymphs); from her came also never draining Pontus (sea).
Eros produced a long in Gaia for her own son Uranus, who showered her with heavenly rain and produced the swirling depths of Oceanus, the river which encircles mother Gaia. Oceanus was the first of the Titans, children of Gaia and Uranus. Next came Thea and Phoebe and their famous sisters, Tethys of the sea, Themis and Rhea of the earth, and Mnemosyne (Memory) who helps us recall our myths; their brothers were Coeus, Crius and lapetus and dazzling Hyperion of the sun. But the youngest was wicked little Cronus, whose schemings would later dethrone Lusty Uranus, the father of the he despised. Later still, the three Cyclopes were born. They had only one eye at the centre of their foreheads and were skillful and crafty smiths. Their names were Brontes (Thunder), Steropes (Lightning), and Arges (whitebolt); it was they who later forged the mighty thunderbolt of Olympian Zeus. More Children were born to Gaia and Uranus, each more monstrous than the last; the three Hecatoncheires brothers- Cottus, Gyes, and Obriareus- each with 100 hands and fifty heads. Their appearance was abhorrent to Uranus, who feared and loathed his off-spring. As they were born, he pushed them back into Gaia's womb, and delighted in her painful groans.
Gaia in her despair made a huge scythe from grey adamant and, showing it to her imprisioned children, said "My dear ones, would you dare to put an end to your father's evil ways?". Young Cronus replied "I am not afraid of my cruel father. It would be right to put an end to his unspeakable behaviour; after all, it is of his own doing". Gaia explained her plot to Cronus, handed him the awesum sickle and took him to a shady place for the ambush.
At twilight lusty Uranus appeared, walking alongside Nyx, his Aunt. In his usual violent manner he mounted Gaia, smothering her with his black bejewelled cloak. Immediately Cronus grabbed Uranus's genitals and, with one sweep of the sharp-toothed sickle, cut them off and threw them carelessly behind him. The drops of blood which besplattered Gaia produced the Erinyes (furies), who in memory of their birth haunt those who murder their own kin. The genitals themselves landed on the beach. The waves caressed them in the prescense of Eros and Himerus (desire) and soon white foam appeared and a girl was born. She came ashore on Cythera, then appeared in Cyprus as a beautiful goddess, and, because she was born from the foam, was named Aphrodite (literally 'Foam-born').
Uranus in his anger gave his children the unflattering name of Titans.

First there was Chaos, a chasm without shape or light. The ample-breasted Gaia (mother earth) emerged, where one day gods and men would dwell; deep beneath her swirled the mists of Tartarus, later the prison of rebelious giant titans; and then appeared the most handsome god of all, Eros (sexual love), who numbs our limbs and defeats our reason- he has the same effect on the immortal gods. No birth of gods, giants, animals or men would have taken place with out his power of attraction.
From the chasm came the two dark ones, Erebus (Dark Underworld) beneath Gaia and Nyx (Night) above her. Eros was present; Nyx and Erebus made love and Nyx gave birth to her brilliant and beautiful children; Aether (Upper Air) with his azure satin clock stretched across the top of the sky; and his sister Hermena (Day) who steps out of Tartarus bringing us light and returns in the twilight, greeting her mother, Nyx, on the other side of the road.
